Spencer Stokes Cedar City, Utah Biology Major Outdoor Engagement My EDGE project was a summer spent working in Rocky Mountain National Park as a Wilderness Ranger. Rocky Mountain National Park is located in north central Colorado and it protects over 400 square miles of pristine mountain landscape. The park is defined by massive peaks, extensive forests, and hundreds of animals. Over 380 miles of trails criss cross this haven of beauty. Rangers are needed to protect this amazing gem of American landscape. As a Wilderness Ranger in RMNP I was tasked with issuing backcountry camping permits, patrolling trails and teaching people. By issuing permits I acted as a guardian for the backcountry by helping inform people of the rules and regulations set up to protect wilderness. I patrolled hundreds of miles of trails and enforced rules. I also gave ranger programs every week on the large mammals in the park. So as Ranger I helped protect wilderness, learned how to help people get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. There were some challenges I faced in completing this project. One of the hardest aspects was moving over 400 mile away from my hometown. Another challenge I faced was the dangers I experienced while on the trail. My favorite obstacle to overcome was learning how to best work with visitors and help satisfy their need to experience adventures. But I enjoyed all the hard trials that I overcame. This project helped many people. I was able to guide people on many trips into the backcountry. I was also able to teach hundreds of people about the park and the animals that call it home. By enforcing the rules and regulations of the park while on patrol I helped preserve the park for future generations. So I would say that this project was a success. I was helped greatly by working as a park ranger. This project helped me advance my career. I learned a lot about helping people get outside. I had absolutely incredible experiences hiking and interacting with the visitors in the park. I became much more involved in hiking and the outdoors. This project helped me immensely. Mine still, the hope that hailed me from every height. Mine the unresting flame
